Description : Tuberculosis treatment of detainees:
Since 2004, the ICRC has been supporting the State Service of Executions of Punishments (SSEP) of the Kyrgyz Republic to establish a comprehensive and sustainable tuberculosis control program in the penitentiary sector. Today, all detainees affected by tuberculosis are being treated in the Penal Institution ? 31.
The ICRC medical team carries out daily visits to TB patients in this facility, provides them with psychological support, assists local doctors and organizes information sessions and trainings for the administration and health personnel of the Penal Institution 31.
The ICRC supports the TB laboratories in Penal Institution-31 and in SIZO-1 through staff trainings and purchase of laboratory reagents. When needs arise, it supports the Republican Reference Laboratory in Bishkek and Osh Interregional Reference Laboratory with the delivery of laboratory consumables, in coordination with other organizations.

Water and Habitat in the penitentiary system:
To support the TB program, the ICRC construction team carried out major renovation and construction works in the Penal Institution ? 31. The works include 6’000 sq.m. of medical facilities designed to facilitate the treatment of various types of TB, including a separate complex dedicated to the treatment of life-sentenced detainees affected by the TB.
To support the Health in IVS project the ICRC renovated five IVSs, including rooms devoted to medical examination.
Along with these activities, the ICRC supported maintenance and rehabilitation works aimed at improving living conditions (water supply, ventilation, heating, sewage, rehabilitation of accommodation, family visit rooms, etc) of the detainees in other places of detention. At the same time the ICRC supports SSEP staff with theoretical and on- the- job training.
