Description :
In the dry season, many people in Rakhine State face water shortages every year. Through various initiatives, including technical and material support as well as construction, the ICRC works year-round in both rural and urban settings alongside communities to improve access to water.
The ICRC is working to bring in water trucks to 29 quarters in Sittwe and four villages in Mrauk U and Minbya townships. In partnership with the Myanmar Red Cross Society, the ICRC also supplies water to 18 camps for internally displaced persons, where the need is often greater. ‘’We started delivering water in April and will continue until the first week of June,” said Naw Tsu Kyae Zue, an ICRC engineer. “We provided water to around 120,000 people and will continue to monitor the situation for further assistance.”
In May, the ICRC refilled water to 43 water ponds in 31 villages across Mrauk U, Minbya and Kyauktaw townships and also supported the water pumps, generators and water pipes for installation processes to transfer water from Kandaw Gyi Lake to households. Cash assistance was provided to fix hand pumps and tube wells, while fuel was also supplied to run generators. ICRC teams also provided covers to reduce water evaporation for five water ponds in Rathedaung. These efforts, in cooperation with the Myanmar Red Cross Society and the relevant authorities, seek to improve long-term access to safe drinking water for people in Rakhine.
