Displaced families living in temporary camps face many challenges, including deterioration of shelters due to rain and wind. This situation could leave them homeless. “Our shelters could easily blow away when the strong winds come,” says a person from Zay Di Tuang camp for displaced people in Rathedaung. “There are holes in our roof – when it rains, water leaks through.” To help communities prepare for the monsoon season, the ICRC is helping build 25 new longhouses in eight temporary camps, contributing to the renovation of more than 800 shelters across eight other temporary camps based in Rathedaung township as well as the construction of new latrines, showers and kitchens across the camps.
With these ongoing construction projects, more than 2000 families living across 23 temporary camps in Rathedaung township will be better prepared to face the challenges of the rainy season.
