Description :
The International Committee of the Red Cross is deeply concerned about the overall deterioration of the healthcare system observed in the Kivu region, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This deterioration is caused by armed conflicts and insecurity, economic challenges, and the drastic decline in funding for humanitarian organizations. If urgent measures are not taken, the lives of thousands of people could be at risk.
In the first quarter of 2025, 2,351 weapon-wounded individuals were treated in ICRC-supported hospitals, nearly matching the total number of cases received throughout 2024, representing a 172% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Another observation is the nature of the injuries: they are now more complex, requiring prolonged follow-up, with more severe consequences such as amputations, as they are primarily caused by explosive weapon fragments, whose use by belligerents has been particularly significant in recent months.
