Suleiman Ahmed Juma, 55 years old. He has 3 wives and 18 children.

"I had 7 houses before, 20km from this village [Um Al Khairat] . In July 2004 all burned- They took whatever they could and burnt the rest. Everything was burned and looted. I carried my children and fled to Um Al Khairat but war followed us, and then we fled to Gereida.
These kids, we carried them on donkeys and on donkey carts - all of them. The elder were walking . We were scared to death , there was a lot of fighting. All we were thinking about was our children, we left everything we owned. All we had with us was god and our children. We left all our money all we had .
When we got to Gereida the Sudanese Red Crescent gave us food and drink for the night, then later on the ICRC came and they started to give us assistance and thank god until 2006.
In 2006 we came back to Um Al Khairat but our gardens were taken by other people who were working in them. We had to go back to Gereida.
We came back here this year [2009]. ICRC came and registered us and gave us seed and a little bit of sorgum and okra and gave us planting tools and we planted.
Some people collect wood, some people collect hay. During the last rainy season we planted, but the birds ate part of our sorghum. However the ground nuts production were good. We thank god now even security is coming slowly back. "
