Description : “I had no knowledge about blacksmithing. My previous profession was car maintenance. I liked to get the training on blacksmithing for the art and creativity it has and because it will help me in the future. The training period was three month, during which I learnt the basics and then learnt the arts of this profession. I would like to continue in this profession in the future and to make simple things that could increase my income.” Says the man.
The trainees consisted of 20 detainees and 20 guards from detention places. It is the first time the ICRC holds this type of project in Gaza. In partnership with the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Social Development, forty people now have a new skill backed by an official professional certificate, which will help them provide income for their families in the future, but also maintain the infrastructure in detention places for the benefit of all detainees and detention staff. This training is the first step of a three-year program, which includes trainings every year. The second step will be to provide the five detention places with materials and tools to be able to do the proper maintenance and to keep the infrastructure in good conditions. After the completion of the program, the detention authorities are expected to be able to self-finance the maintenance system.
