Description : “Before receiving this training, I was afraid of touching a plug. Now, I broke the fear barrier and I know everything about electricity. Because of this training, I can work in houses and can do electricity maintenance in a full capacity detention place. I also learnt how to build electricity control system and how to switch between different power systems; for example between solar system, public grid and other systems. This profession will help my family in the future because I am able to support myself and depend on myself.” Says the man.
The trainees consisted of 20 detainees and 20 guards from detention places. It is the first time the ICRC holds this type of project in Gaza. In partnership with the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Social Development, forty people now have a new skill backed by an official professional certificate, which will help them provide income for their families in the future, but also maintain the infrastructure in detention places for the benefit of all detainees and detention staff. This training is the first step of a three-year program, which includes trainings every year. The second step will be to provide the five detention places with materials and tools to be able to do the proper maintenance and to keep the infrastructure in good conditions. After the completion of the program, the detention authorities are expected to be able to self-finance the maintenance system.
