Description : Safe and dignified burials are critical in the fight against the Ebola virus because the body of an Ebola victim is highly contagious. Entire families or anyone touching the body without protection can be infected, which is why trained and equipped personnel only should conduct the burials. To help accept the burials that obviously differ from the traditional way, the burial teams invite one member of the family to take part in preparing the body, wearing the full protective suit. This allows them to see the body as well, which can be important in some cultures. The rest of the family can participate in the funeral and perform any rituals they like, respecting the safety distance of one metre to avoid any contamination. By mid-November, more than 150 local Red Cross volunteers have been trained in North Kivu and Ituri provinces and have conducted over 350 safe and dignified burials.
