Abdullah has always been full of dreams. But for much of his young life, those dreams seemed out of reach. Abdullah was faced with challenges that many children his age can scarcely imagine.
From an early age, his mother searched for solutions, taking him from one medical consultation to another. Despite all their efforts, Abdullah's ability to walk and move normally remained limited, and the idea of him attending school seemed remote. After careful consideration and many difficult decisions, Abdullah had his lower limbs amputated. At the ICRC physical rehabilitation centre, he was fitted with a prosthesis that enabled him to regain the mobility that had long been denied him.
This year, Abdullah's life took a turn for the better. He is going to school for the first time. The excitement in his voice was evident as he talked about his preparations. I bought a red bag for school,’ he said. Inside, he carefully placed pens, notebooks and all the stationery he would need. His mother, who has been with him every step of the way, says: ‘At last he will go to school, he will learn, he will be like the other children. As Abdullah prepares for his first day at school, his heart is full of hope and ambition.
He dreams of becoming a doctor, a goal inspired by the many doctors who have helped him along the way. ‘I want to help people, like they helped me,’ he says. Abdullah's journey has only just begun, but his story is already one of incredible hope. In his red satchel, alongside the pens and notebooks, Abdullah carries something far more precious than his dreams.
