Description :
In Niger’s Tillabéri region, the harsh reality of environmental degradation and climate change is slowly rendering the soil in Famalé infertile. As the desert advances, water grows scarce and seeds struggle to germinate. Enter Fati and Adama , members of local women’s gardening groups. “Before, we could work the land here,” Fati explained, “but it became desert-like, so we moved near the pond.” Adama added, “I used to sell food, but switched to gardening. We relied on fuel pumps until insecurity made purchasing fuel difficult.” In this conflict-affected region doubly impacted by climate change, nine women’s groups comprising 230 members – some of whom are displaced, some resident – were struggling to maintain their gardens growing moringa, onions, cabbage and other produce. The ICRC provided a sustainable solution – distributing solar-powered pumps to irrigate the gardens without requiring scarce fuel. They also trained the women in climate-smart gardening practices to bolster their self-sufficiency and long-term resilience. With drought bearing down and violence disrupting supply chains, the ICRC’s innovative intervention is enabling these women to cultivate their lands and livelihoods against deepening climate and conflict threats.
