Description :
Gardasin is one of a number of camps for displaced persons in northern Iraq. It was set up in June 2007 to house Kurdish families fleeing sectarian violence and threats in the town of Mosul, 50 kilometres away. Nearly a thousand people live in the camp, three-quarters of them women and children. It is set on a desolate plain, burning hot in summer, and with sub-zero temperatures in mid-winter. A number of humanitarian agencies are providing tents, water and food. The water supply has been extended around the camp by the ICRC, which has installed pipelines, taps and a number of latrine blocks. The families here have no access to the monthly food distributions provided by the local authorities and depend mainly on assistance from humanitarian organizations. Food, blankets and basic supplies have twice been distributed by the ICRC and its partner, the Iraqi Red Crescent Society. In this desolate and isolated location, people have little access to jobs, health care or schools for their children. As winter approaches, the ICRC warns that conditions are likely to get worse. Solid floors and extra protection for the tents will be essential.
