Description :
At 98 years old, she has witnessed many changes in Myanmar. She remembers the earthquake that paralyzed the country in 1956 but believes that this one was worse. As she cannot walk, she spends her days on a bench, outside of the house, where she lives with her distant family. During the earthquake, most of her family members were not at home and those who were couldn’t carry her to evacuate. Feeling the earth tremble, she grabbed the bench, thinking that she was going to die. Sher and her family were among the luckiest: all survived.
Today, four out of five families sleep outside, either because their house has been destroyed or they are afraid to enter a dangerous structure. They fear the arrival of the monsoon season.
The ICRC supports these affected communities by providing food aid to the community kitchen.
