Description :
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck many parts of the country on March 28, 2025, killing over a thousand people and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless. Many people found themselves on the streets or taking refuge in religious buildings or schools. Manadalay, close to the epicenter of the earthquake, was already a temporary home for most of the people affected by the conflict, and the disaster has made their situation even more difficult.
The ICRC team, in collaboration with its partners, is working tirelessly to provide emergency aid to the most vulnerable communities. An ICRC staff member commented: "Thanks to our front-line staff, we were able to intervene within a day, which is the most critical time in emergency situations. I'd like to thank all the first responders for their efforts and collaboration, which enabled us to bring rapid, effective help to those who needed it most. After discussing with the front lines and analyzing the situation on the ground, we provided the most essential items such as helmets, heavy-duty gloves, ropes, goggles, as well as other household items such as tarpaulins, mosquito nets, water purifiers and body bags. We also provided stretchers to transport the wounded. He adds: "My family and I are also survivors of this earthquake. We are currently living in a school compound as my apartment was badly damaged. So I can imagine how people cope with these difficult situations and the challenges they face in terms of food and shelter."
