Description : NariƱo department is among the area most affected by the conflict, where armed groups and other parties to the Colombian conflict are battling for control.
To reach the final destination of the trip, one has to pass through Barbacoas and Roberto Payan. It takes around 7 hours drive from the main city of Pasto to get to Barbacoas, included 4 hours of extremely bad road.
Roberto Payan is then reached by an ICRC boat, from where the teams have to use small pirogues to be able to navigate on a small river during around 5 hours. The trip takes then two days from the closest main city - already considered remote by colombian standards.
The main goal of this ICRC field trip was to visit the small villages of Conquista and Negrito. People there had to flee recently due to fighting in and around their villages. When they went back they found their properties looted and destroyed, so the ICRC decided to help them in their return process through various agro programs, water and habitat activities, and support to medical structures.
The water and habit program is a distribution / support for installation of water tanks so the people may use the rain water for their consumption. Material was already distributed, this visit was to show people how to install the tanks next to their houses, school, etc and to monitor the implication of the population. The villagers had to get by themselves the other materials (tubes, connections etc.) in order for them to be fully part of the project and to collaborate actively.
