Description :
For many of the detainees, their day-to-day existence is full of question marks. “When will my case be tried or reviewed?” they might ask. Or, “If I’m cleared for transfer, why am I still here?” In addition to monitoring living conditions inside the prison, the ICRC also pushes for procedural safeguards and mechanisms, such as the Periodic Review Boards, which finally started late last year and offer the possibility for some detainees to have the reasons for their on-going detention regularly examined.
ICRC website, 11.02.2014:
On February 7, the ICRC completed its 100th visit to the United States detention facility at Guantanamo Bay Cuba, where its delegates have been monitoring the detainees' living conditions since 2002 in order to ensure that they are held and treated in accordance with international standards.
