Description : Threats from an armed group, and the lingering danger of improvised explosive devices and explosive remnants of war, have driven a small group of Nukak to settle in the area.

The Nukak came into contact with outsiders only in 1988. They do not acknowledge the notion of private property, and members of the group take whatever they find around their settlement. This is a source of constant tensions with surrounding landowners; the group has already been threatened with death. Their plight at present is tragic: apart from medical care, they receive almost no assistance and are without access to their traditional resources; this has reduced them to begging and selling handicrafts to the occasional visitor. Occasionally, some of them will go hunting for a month or two and come back with traditional food, like monkey meat; but this is far from enough to feed the entire group.
