Description :
Jobel is an Island of 422 souls located in the most remote area of Guinea Bissau. Forced to flee in to Senegal in 1968 during the independence war of Amilcar Cabral, they have returned to their island in 1975. They live with the strength of their courage on a 6 km 2 land below sea level without soft water, and electricity. Their daily battle is to keep salt water of the island so they can cultivate rice and walk long distance to get fresh water for survival.
These women step over one of the numerous floodgate selfregulated (made of a kind of palm tree called "rônier" or scooped out palm tree, they are equiped with valve to allow water to flow out the Island and to avoid the salted water to get into.
