Abu Firas relates: "I owned a pastry shop for 25 years, I was doing very well, I had a family with 5 children, I had a small car, and 4 co-workers to help me run my shop. The heavy fights in old city of Homs led to the destruction of my shop, it was very difficult times. My family and I left our house in search of safety, but everywhere we moved in Homs, the fights followed. We had to change houses four times. During those difficult days, I even worked as a porter to make ends meet.
When people were able to return to old city of Homs after the fights there had stopped, my family decided to come back to our house. I didn’t have enough money to rent a shop, so I turned one of the bedrooms into a pastry shop, and was given support by the ICRC and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent in shape of ovens and other materials, helping me to start again. Mine is the first pastry shop which has reopened in the old city of Homs. I am happy to be back, this is my home. When you visit Homs, please do come and taste my delicious pastries. "
