Description : Nasser relates: " Our family owned a shop which had been selling falafels for over 40 years on Hamidiyah street in the old city of Homs.
We had to close the shop and leave everything behind when fights erupted in the old city. My family which included a son and two daughters were displaced. We rented a house outside the old city, but I could’nt find any work or employment. I am 60 years old and nobody was interested in giving job to an old man. I had little savings, and with support from some relatives we could manage life in those difficult days.
Once the old city was reopened for returnees, we came back, and with the help from the ICRC and the Syrian Arab Red Cross, I restarted the falafel shop. My old customers remembered the taste of our falafels and they started coming back. Now I am earning enough to look after my family, and this is just the first month. I hope that our shop goes back to its original busy times, when we had many clients and we were also selling hummus and matzo balls.
You cannot just open a food business; you need to be a food connoisseur to do so."
