Description : The persistent threat of explosive remnants of war (ERW) in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), particularly in the North Kivu province, remains a pressing issue. After more than three decades of armed conflict, these explosive devices continue to pose a danger to civilian populations, especially children, who account for a significant proportion of the victims. Areas contaminated by shells, grenades, rockets, and other unexploded ordnance make daily life perilous.
Between January and March 2025, the CBCA Ndosho Hospital in Goma treated 1,419 weapon-related injuries, including 301 victims of ERW. This situation is exacerbated by the absence of specialized demining NGOs, which have ceased their activities due to recent clashes.
In response to this crisis, the ICRC plays a key role. The organization marks hazardous areas, raises awareness among local populations about the risks, and trains community leaders on how to respond when ERW are discovered. However, the urgency of establishing an effective decontamination mechanism is emphasized to ensure the safety of residents and allow them to resume a normal life.
