Description :
The persistent threat of explosive remnants of war (ERW) in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), particularly in the North Kivu province, remains a pressing issue. After more than three decades of armed conflict, these explosive devices continue to pose a danger to civilian populations, especially children, who account for a significant proportion of the victims. Areas contaminated by shells, grenades, rockets, and other unexploded ordnance make daily life perilous. Destin Nalanda, a weapon contamination specialist with the ICRC, works to reduce the risks associated with unexploded ordnance by marking hazardous areas. These markings, which are regularly updated, aim to prevent accidents and alert communities to contaminated zones, especially in the event of new dangers.
