Description : Aimé-Dieu Mapendano Amani, 10 years old, suffered a severe finger injury while handling a cartridge he found in the forest. Believing it to be harmless, he threw a stone at it, causing an explosion that seriously injured his finger. He was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent surgery. Despite the pain and uncertainty about the future of his finger, Aimé-Dieu remains hopeful for recovery and to continue growing up.
The use of explosive weapons has contaminated many areas in the Kivu region, endangering the lives of civilians. To prevent such tragedies, the ICRC works alongside local communities. Its efforts include marking hazardous areas, raising awareness about the risks of explosive remnants of war, and providing support to victims.
