Description : The district was completely destroyed by an eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano in 2002.

Only a third of Goma has running water, with the remaining two-thirds of the population relying on fetching water from Lake Kivu every day, or from private water trucks who sell water in communities. The ICRC, in partnership with Mercy Corps, is renovating the city water system, building and renovating pumping stations, and laying new pipes throughout the city.
