Description :
Violence against health care is one of the most crucial yet overlooked humanitarian issues of today. In situations of conflict, the people and services that can bring vital assistance or save the lives of those affected, whether the latter are civilians or fighters, are too often not sufficiently spared or respected. In the DRC, attacks against healthcare structures and medical evacuation teams are unfortunately all too common. Doctors, nurses and patients may be subject to intimidation by armed men, which jeopardises the neutrality of healthcare structures and the impartiality of healthcare provision. The continuing and general insecurity that marks the Kivu provinces also affects everyone's access to appropriate care. It means that many people fear going to a healthcare centre because of the dangers of travelling there, or that healthcare workers find themselves having to flee an area because of renewed fighting or threats to their own lives. Getting essential medicines and equipment to front lines or areas of ongoing fighting can also be a real problem.
