No one knows the full scale of displacement in the Kivu provinces. Numbers are high and circulated widely. They were in the hundreds of thousands these past few months alone, as violence escalated sharply. What the figures do not tell us are the frequency and the variety of ways in which people are displaced and how they manage to cope. From fleeing violence suddenly or leaving an area in a more 'orderly' way because of rumours of impending attacks, people might find themselves displaced from their homes for periods ranging from a few hours to several days or years at a time. Sometimes displacement can become permanent, or repeated, with families wrapping up their mattresses (for those who have them) or their few possessions to set up new homes where they can. From living in a cramped camp for the internally displaced, to staying with host families in neighbouring towns, to crossing an international border and facing adversity there, some are displaced across long distances while others return during the day to tend their fields.
