Description :
It was the first official training to the recently founded Red Cross. A total of 17 volunteers (13 men and 4 women) took part in the training in July 2013 in Juba. They came from the North, South, East and West of South Sudan.
The aim of the course was to strengthen the confidence and skills of the participants in responding to emergency situations, and to teach different groups in the future. The training was also meant to help participants to care for the wounded, and to have a common understanding of an emergency (signs, consequences and main actions to be taken) and its realities in the context where the participants live. Basic preventive measures as well as security and safety of the wounded and first-aiders were constantly reminded throughout the training course. Simulation cases (burns, fractures, gunshot wounds, chest wounds, unconsciousness cases) were practised in situations which the participants have faced, or could face, in urban, remote, on the road scenarios.
There are more than 20 teams of rescuers in South Sudan at present. The course was given in English and Arabic simultaneously.
Once the course is completed, the participants will be able to empower other volunteers, arms carriers (state and non-state actors) and other members of the general population. Volunteers are usually at the frontline of the emergencies during armed clashes or other situations of violence.
