Description : Malakal Teaching Hospital is the only referral hospital for Unity, Jonglei and Upper Nile states in South Sudan. The hospital is run by the national ministry of health and covers a vast area of approximately 3 million inhabitants.
The ICRC's medical team based in the hospital provides trauma and emergency surgical care along with paediatric and physiotherapy services. It also delivers on-the-job training for hospital staff.
Over 320 surgical emergencies have been handled at the hospital during the past 4 months. In 2012, the ICRC medical team performed emergency surgery on over 800 patients: 221 were weapon-wounded.
The ICRC has been providing Malakal Teaching hospital with consumables and other supplies for treating the wounded and the sick. It also donates medical supplies to help other hospitals in South Sudan tackle emergencies.
After 20 years of civil war, there is a lack of trained doctors and nurses in South Sudan. To accompany an increase in workforce skill levels, the ICRC is improving hospital facilities by upgrading the water system and building a new operating theatre.
Due to the lack of proper infrastructure (transport & roads), many patients only go to the hospital when they are already in a poor condition. Many of them do not have the means to arrive at the hospital.
Only few of the nursing staff has formal education.
Although the hospital has 3 ambulances, all of them are broken.
