Description :
An estimated 50,000 people in the country have physical disabilities, which are often due to injuries sustained in connection with the armed conflict. Landmines, already common in the preindependence armed conflict between the north and the south, are still used today.
Together with the South Sudanese government, the ICRC manages a physical rehabilitation centre in Juba. The rehabilitation centre, which is the only one of its kind in the country, provides prosthetic and orthotic services for thousands of disabled people each year, helping them to resume a normal life.
Within the past 4 months, the centre has admitted over 500 physically disabled patients, including 355 amputees.
The centre manufactures prostheses and orthoses, physiotherapy and other services. The ICRC also provides food for patients who stay at the facility.
In this photo, Akot (18). A landmine exploded in his hand last March when he picked up a colourful device in Malakal, where he currently lives. He arrived at the Juba orthopaedic centre a week ago and is waiting until a new prosthesis for his hand will be finally crafted.
