The yellow flower is strung over headstones and laid on altars, thought to represent the brightness of the sun illuminating a path for the spirits to return to Earth from Mictlan, the underworld. This year, the usually festive traditions around the Day of the Dead were largely celebrated in private, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
