En octobre 2008, María Elena a été prise entre deux feux lors d'un affrontement entre les forces du gouvernement et des factions armées. Elle a été touchée au bras gauche pendant qu'elle allaitait sa fille et a perdu tellement de sang qu'elle a tout juste survécu : son bras a dû être amputé. Néanmoins, elle continue de faire vivre sa famille.
In October 2008, María Elena was caught in the crossfire between government forces and armed factions. She was hit in her left arm while breastfeeding her daughter and lost so much blood that she barely survived: her arm had to be amputated. Nevertheless, she still continues to help support her family.
