Description : This woman lost her leg to a landmine in 1987. She had lost her husband to a landmine three years earlier, leaving her handicapped, without any assistance and with 11 children to raise. She then lost 9 of her children over the years to come, some as a result of her extreme poverty exacerbated by her handicap. This region is one of the most densely landmined in the world, effectively cutting off 50% of all arable land for these villages. These landmines have been in place since the early 1970's and the Norwegian Peoples Aid Agency (NPA) have been demining the area for some time. NPA hope to finish by the end of 2014 but that may be optimistic given the recent discovery of new minefields and resurgent violence in the country.
