Description :
APOPO uses the rats in conjunction with mechanical diggers and human deminers. The rats use their acute sense of smell to accelerate the demining process, making it possible to clear fields faster, a key goal for Mozambique who is seeking to be landmine free by the end of 2014. APOPO is a registered Belgian non-governmental organisation which trains African giant pouched rats to detect landmines and tuberculosis.
