Description : Yanamilla prison houses 2319 inmates; 187 of which are women and 2132 men. Many of the inmates, both women and men, spend their days making crafts, sewing clothing, furniture as well as weaving, as the prison is one of the largest producers of “Mantas”, the traditional bright coloured clothes that Peruvians use as bags to carry their goods. Several women have babies in the prison, who are permitted until they are three years of age. Despite there too few beds for the number of inmates, the prison’s quarters are kept immaculately clean.
