Description : The family has been living in a makeshift encampment in the forest for over a year. Gérard's groundnut and manioc fields are close by. The family survives on what they can grow, supplemented with forest fruits and other wild food. Gérard -- who was finishing school when his village was attacked -- wants to continue his education but feels too insecure to return home for the time being.

Unless constant care is taken to keep the soil free of weeds, even carefully planted crops may not grow well. In this picture, taken in the family's groundnut field, Gérard's wife, Alimie removes grass and other debris with one of the hoes they received from the ICRC. Behind her are her husband and his mother, Angel.
