Description :
The armed conflict that broke out in Khartoum quickly spread to Omdurman, where Achan Mayuen, a mother of seven, was living with her family. Her husband, a truck driver, was hundreds of kilometers away in western Sudan at the time.
Nearly two and a half years later, still with no news of him and as the conflict intensified, Achan was forced to leave the relative comfort of their home in Omdurman and flee with her children to South Sudan.
She now lives in a makeshift shelter built from salvaged materials in the Gudele residential area of Juba. She says she struggles to provide food for her family, and none of her seven children are enrolled in school.
Local authorities have called on the ICRC to act as a neutral intermediary, in accordance with its humanitarian mandate, and facilitate transfers. Since South Sudan's independence in 2011, the ICRC has worked to trace South Sudanese nationals displaced by conflict and reunite them with their families. The organization helps families separated by conflict or other forms of violence to reconnect. It registers relatives and searches for their loved ones, whether they are within or outside the country. The ICRC always ensures that family members are willing to be reunited and that it is in the best interest of all parties involved.
