Description :
Achot Akol's injuries became infected. However, ICRC doctors managed to repair the damaged tissues, thereby restoring her mobility.
On May 8, 2023, the ICRC inaugurated a new operating theater (OT) at the Juba Military Hospital (JMH). This operating theater provides surgical interventions, particularly for patients injured by weapons. It is the first operating theater built from scratch by the ICRC in South Sudan, a project that took 13 months to complete. This new facility enables surgical teams to deliver care in compliance with standards and helps improve the quality of services offered to patients in South Sudan, particularly in terms of infection control and the transfer of weapon-wounded patients. It also has the potential to address the needs of injured patients arriving from Sudan due to the ongoing armed conflict in that country.
Since its independence in 2011, South Sudan has experienced prolonged conflicts and armed violence. Tensions, intercommunal violence, and hostilities continue to escalate, placing additional pressure on the South Sudanese population and its healthcare infrastructure.
