Description :
According to figures from the World Health Organization (WHO), polio is a highly infectious viral disease that attacks the nervous system and can cause total paralysis within hours. One in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis (usually of the legs), as in the case of Mageng Abur Chol. Specialists at the Physical Rehabilitation Centre continue to assess his condition to determine the best way to restore his mobility.
In the country, the ICRC supports three physical rehabilitation centers located in Juba, Wau, and Rumbek. These centers provide prostheses, crutches, and wheelchairs, as well as comprehensive clinical support, including physiotherapy sessions to help patients regain mobility, and psychosocial support. In 2025, more than 4,300 people benefited from physical rehabilitation services in these centers, representing a 30% increase compared to the previous year.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 300,000 people in South Sudan are in need of orthopedic and mobility care.
