He says that he and many other men from his village in Lakes State went fishing as usual on 16 July 2025, when they were suddenly rattled by a burst of gunfire. Caught completely by surprise, several people in the group were killed or injured in the attack. He says he was stranded in the bush for two days without medical attention, and by the time the ICRC reached him and airlifted him to Juba, the tissue damage was so severe that his left leg had to be amputated. Madut wonders if he will ever be able to go fishing in his village again.
On 8th May 2023, the ICRC inaugurated a new Operating Theatre (OT) in Juba Military Hospital (JMH). The OT provides medical surgeries, particularly for weapon-wounded patients. This is the first operating theatre that the ICRC constructed from the ground up in South Sudan, which took 13 months to complete. The newly inaugurated facility enables the surgical teams to apply standard surgical care and helps improve the quality of services provided to patients in South Sudan, including infection control and transfer of weapon-wounded patients. It also has the potential to address the needs of wounded patients entering the country from Sudan due to the ongoing armed conflict there.
South Sudan has experienced protracted conflict and armed violence since its independence in 2011. Tensions, inter-communal violence, and hostilities continue to flare up, imposing further pressure on the people of South Sudan and its health facilities.
