Description : During the summer 2006 war with Israel, practically almost all bakeries in Tyre closed down, leaving only this one in Rashidiyeh (plus another one in Tyre town) to feed the entire population. Bread is a staple food in Lebanon. Thanks to the fuel and flour provided in part by the ICRC, this bakery produced up to four tons of bread per day, enough to feed 100,000 people, Palestinians as well as Lebanese. Volunteers worked in two shifts, 18 hours per day. Securing the flour was difficult and dangerous asit had tobe trucked in from Sidon (40 km north) during eratic lulls in the fighting. To make matter worse all bridges to the entrance of Tyre were destroyed and moving vehicles were often targeted from the air. Men had to carry the heavy bags of flour across a temporary bridge built over the Litani River.
