À Tripoli, le conflit oppose des milices, des sectes et des quartiers les uns aux autres. C'est une situation complexe qui a ses origines dans la guerre civile du Liban. Les derniers affrontements ont commencé début mai 2008, pour atteindre leur paroxysme en juillet et en août. Le conflit a éclaté à Beyrouth, où des membres de ce qui était alors le parti d'opposition ont affronté les loyalistes au pouvoir dans les rues de la ville. Les combats ont rapidement atteint Tripoli, mettant en danger quelque 150 000 habitants.
The conflict in Tripoli pits militias, sects and neighbourhoods against one another. It is a complex affair whose origins go back to the civil war in Lebanon. The latest round of fighting began in early May 2008 and peaked in July and August. The conflict erupted in Beirut where members of what was then the opposition party confronted the ruling loyalists on the streets of the city. The fighting soon reached Tripoli, endangering approximately 150,000 inhabitants.
