Description :
Milad is a nurse, the last to leave the camp on 12 June 2006 (where the fighting had started on 20 May). At that time, only 500 to 600 of the original 40,000 inhabitants were still in Nahr el Bared. They were trapped by the fighting, with little food or water. Together with one last doctor, Milad was the only medic to come to the aid of the people left behind. He stayed, he says, because "I am a nurse, I am a human being. I can help better than others." He received medicines provided by the ICRC via the Palestine Red Crescent, whose ambulances were allowed into the camp one at a time. During the fighting, he saw many people killed or injured. He tells of one case in which he assisted in a difficult delivery, all the while coached by an ICRC doctor on the phone.
Milad now works at the Centre, which gives psycho-social counselling for young people, many of whom have been traumatized by the fighting. Jihad, a small boy of four who no longer speaks, continuously clings to Milad.
Nahr el Bared has a long way to go, says Milad, before things return to normal.
