Description : The two Chechen conflicts left this village virtually destroyed. Before the conflicts, there were 1914 households living in the village. Today, only 73 remain. The land in and around Bamut is mined. In this photo, Maryam prepares traditional meat dumplings that she sells as part of the ICRC Micro Economic Initiative program. The ICRC gave her all the necessary equipment to start her food preparation business (a meat grinder and a freezer). Prior to the project provided by the ICRC, the family's only source of income stemmed from wild garlic picking and selling. However, because of landmines, it remains a risky activity. Maryam's 18 year-old son, Adam Patsuev, born in 1984, disappeared in 2003, together with five other young men. He has been missing since.
