In the background fellow deminers pause waiting for him to move a safe distance away before continuing their work of clearing vegetation in search of surface cluster sub-munitions. Amongst the vegetation are tobacco plants which the deminers harvest for local residents in order to prevent them from trying to do so themselves. The UN estimates about a million unexploded cluster sub-munitions in Southern Lebanon following the war with Israel in 2006.
